Entry Registration & Fees

Entry Registration: Entry registration (via online State Fair Commerical Beer Competition website noted below). You must register your entries using this site. All entry fees must be received by Wednesday , May 22, 2019 by 4:00 pm. No extension of the entry date is planned. Official guidelines are also available at castatefair.org/craftbeer/.

Entry Fees: Registration fees are $50.00 per entry. Payment must be via check, money order or PayPal. NO CASH ACCEPTED FOR ENTRIES. Do Not send Payments with Entries. Brewers must use online registration. Payment must be received in advance by the date above per one of the following methods:

  • PayPal– Using online California State Fair Commerical Beer Competition website (this site). Additional PayPal processing fees may apply. Before midnight May 22, 2019;
  • Check or money order payable to California State Fair, ATTN: Commercial Beer Competition,1600 Exposition Blvd.
    Sacramento, CA 95815. Mail must be postmarked no later than May 22, 2019.

Checks and money orders must be accompanied by a list of entry numbers for identification of the sender. For any entries that are registered but not submitted, PLEASE notify the competition organizers immediately after the entry deadline. Refunds are available for those that miss the entry deadline and notify the organizers prior to the start of judging.

Mailing List and Notification: Although we try to keep mailing lists current, we cannot be held responsible for any individual or company that is not notified or contacted.

Brewers must be:

Official residents of California

The brewery must hold a valid commercial brewing license and

Brewers must be at least 21 years of age.

Persons submitting an entry must have a direct association with the brewing of the entry, being a brewer, owner, or management. Distributors are not considered directly related to the production of beer and may only submit entries in the names of their clients, with their clients’ approval.

Contract brews may only be entered by the brewery which produced them.

Entrants or their qualified representative may participate in the judging on any panel they are not entered.

Eligible: At least 51% of the fermentable carbohydrates must be derived from malted grains. Beverages made with malt substitutes, honey, fruit or fruit juices, or anything other than malted grains as the majority of fermentable sugars are not eligible to participate.

Not eligible: Mead, cider, spirits, hard soda, hard water, and flavored malt beverages including kombucha and most shandies and radlers are not eligible to be entered in the State Fair competition.

No single brewing location nor a group that owns multiple breweries may enter more than a total of 20 beers combined

A beer brand may not be renamed and entered into multiple categories, however, the same beer brand can be entered into multiple categories. A separate entry fee must be paid for each additional category entered, and the minimum bottle, can, crowler, growler, or keg requirements still apply. Also, you must not exceed the 20 maximum total entry limit.

All judging will be done whenever possible with panels combining qualified judges and commercial brewing peers. Brewers or judges may not judge on panels in which they have a conflict of interest. At least one judge who has been certified by the Beer Judge Certification Program will sit on each judging panel.

Beers will be disqualified for entry requirement infractions. These beers will be judged and will receive evaluations but will be ineligible for awards.

All beers will be decanted prior to presentation to the judges. Kegs will be served off 5’ quarter inch tubing at 10 psi.

Brewers are required to use online registration and payment castatefair.org/california-commercial-beer/.

Please include with shipment packaging or delivery, a summary of your entries. This can be printed from the online entry submission software.

No late entries will be accepted.

By submitting an entry to this competition the entrant:

  • Asserts that they have legal title to submit the entry.
  • Asserts the beer was brewed in the State and for commercial sale in the State of California.
  • Agrees to provide proof of such availability upon request.
  • Agrees to abide by the herein-stated policy on use of any awards or certificates in advertising.

All breweries that have entered the competition are invited and encouraged to participate in the awards presentation as well as the Best of California Brewfest at the California State Fair on July 20, 2019.

Advertising

The only allowable use of awards and certificates given by the California State Fair Commercial Craft Brewing Competition for advertising purposes shall be as follows:

  • Any advertising use must clearly state the name and year of the competition, (i.e., Best of California Commercial Craft Brew Competition 2019).
  • Must clearly state the level and category of award, (i.e., Silver Certificate Stouts... 1st Place Light Ales).
  • One Best of Show will be awarded by the judges of the competition; no one else may use the designation “Best of Show” in any advertising using the name of this competition or its awards.
  • The term “Best Beer in California shall not be used in conjunction with any awards made by this competition.

Failure to comply with these guidelines will be a basis for revocation of awards or certificates by organizers and the publication of such revocations to the general public.

Best of Show winner will have winning beer featured in California State Fair Beer Garden. Spectra by Comcast Spectacor will buy beer from the winner and arrange for shipping for entire three weeks of fair.

Submission/receipt of entries (bottles, cans, kegs, crowlers, growlers, etc.) Northern CA: Tuesday, May 20, 2019, to Wednesday, May 22, 2019 (end 4 pm)

Southern CA: Monday, May 6, 2019, to Friday, May 17, 2019. (end 4 pm)

No early or late entries will be accepted. If you paid using PayPal, please include a copy of your receipt with your entries. Do not remove any commercial bottle labels.

Most categories are divided into distinct styles and each beer will be judged as that style. When appropriate, be sure to indicate the style of each beer in the space provided on the entry forms. Entries that do not specify a style on the entry form may be disqualified at the discretion of the Organizing Committee. The Committee reserves the right to modify categories as needed.

Any entry may be submitted in: 12/16/20 ounce bottles/cans with bottle label attached (minimum of 4 bottles/cans per entry) or; 22/24 ounce bottles with label attached (minimum of 4 bottles per entry) or; Crowlers (4 minimum)/Growlers (2 minimum) or; Cornelius Kegs, ball or pin lock (minimum 1 gallon - maximum 5 gallons) or; Sankey Kegs (max 7.5 gallons); disposable/recyclable kegs preferred (5 gallons).
